Tuesday 27th October 2009 – Workshop in SIF

We were in Sheffield Independent Film today for a workshop on camera/character positioning with two and three actors. I found the workshop quite useful as I’ve never thought about the difficulty of getting three characters in shot before. It was interesting to see other people’s ideas on camera positions too, especially as some people had shot ideas which I didn’t think of for some of the actions.

We also got given a script for a scene in Taxi Driver and were told that we would be filming the scene in our groups in two weeks time. We decided that I should think about camera work so that I could get enough practice in as possible – I’m not actually doing cinematography this semester so I thought this would be very useful for me. Nicola was given the role of Betsy, Josh was given Travis, and Sam played Tom. To be honest, although it was a laugh today, it was an absolute nightmare! I haven’t seen the film before so it was easy for me to come up with my own shot ideas, without basing them on the film. However, for the people who had seen the film it was difficult for them to imagine it any other way, so our ideas clashed alllll the way through! There were too many voices at once so it took ten times longer than it should have…think it’s because we’re all so stubborn and set on our own ideas!
